Building Democracy Postponed… sneak peek next Friday
We want to let you know that we’ve decided to postpone Democracy on the Mall until spring of 2024. The idea of a week-long convergence with art, culture and politics had a ton of potential, but as sometimes happens with volunteer-led projects, we weren’t able to organize for enough capacity to make it work on the scale that it deserves.
From the beginning the goals of the project were around deepening relationships and movement building. A week out it’s pretty clear that trying to go ahead as planned would cause more strain and exhaustion than strengthened ties and increased capacity. Rather than go through the motions with a half-baked version of the mobilization, we’ve decided to postpone until we can find the capacity to take this on with the energy and care it deserves.
We do, however, have a really cool and timely art piece… and a bunch of newly found free time next week and a permit on the national mall in front of the Capitol. So we’re planning on bringing out the “Building Democracy” installation and setting it up on the mall as a sneak preview of what’s to come on Friday (10/20).
If you’re free, please try to join us on the Mall next Friday. We’ll set up our massive “Building Democracy” installation in front of the Capitol and spend the afternoon with good food and a sweet playlist, scheming about making good trouble.
We’ll start building the installation at 2pm and the party starts at 4pm. Let us know if you can join us so we can make sure to order enough food!
