Senator Josh Hawley, the guy who led the attack on the 2020 election results during the January 6 siege of the Capitol, is trying to get ShutDownDC organizers thrown in jail. 

On January 4, two days before the deadly attack on the Capitol, ShutDownDC activists held a candlelight vigil outside of Hawley’s home in Vienna, Virginia (yeah, the Senator from Missouri actually lives in Virginia… he uses his sister’s address in Ozark, MO as his voting address).

The goal of the vigil was to call on Senator Hawley to abandon his plans to oppose the certification of lawfully cast votes. We held candles and signs, chanted, prayed, and delivered a copy of the Constitution (with Article II, Section I helpfully earmarked) to the Senator’s front door. According to the Associated Press, a spokesman for the Vienna Police Department characterized the vigil as “peaceful.” The spokesman stated that the event was “minor,” and noted that there were “no issues, no arrests.”

Now, according to ABC News, the Kansas City Star, and Fox News, the Hawleys have gotten a local magistrate to issue a summons accusing at least one ShutDownDC organizer of “Illegally Demonstrating,” a third degree misdemeanor.

While we certainly cannot comment on any potentially pending criminal case, we believe it is outrageous that rich and powerful people – a United States Senator and his family – might attempt to silence peaceful citizens’ exercise of their First Amendment rights.

Senator Hawley’s lies, both about the election and the candlelight vigil at his home, are dangerous and damaging to our democracy. He should resign or be expelled from the Senate for his continuous campaign of disinformation regarding the 2020 presidential election. These potential allegations are merely a false flag, intended to distract the public from Senator Hawley’s unconscionable behavior.
