Shutting Things Down to Open Things Up
Last November we went to the polls and voted for the programs that our communities need to thrive. We voted for action on the climate crisis, racial justice, the Child Tax Credit, quality healthcare for our families, and a democracy that works for all of us.
For the first 11 months of the year much of that agenda has been stalled by a Republican filibuster in the Senate and inaction among a handful of ‘centrists’ who are more concerned about their donors and special interests than about improving lives for people in our communities.
As 2021 comes to a close the timeline for passing the programs that we voted for and that our communities need is rapidly waning. We’re facing a DEADLINE FOR DEMOCRACY.
So tomorrow we’re going to shut things down to open up space for a new kind of politics! Starting at 7am we’re going to blockade intersections around the US Capitol to disrupt business as usual in Washington, DC. Then at 12 noon, after we’ve shut down business as usual, and opened up space for a new kind of politics, we’ll join allies from a wide range of social movements for a rally at the Capitol to raise up our demands for the bold action our communities need.
We’ve been organizing, mobilizing and training for weeks. If you have already joined a blockade group make sure you’re in touch with the rest of you crew and show up by 6:30am… We’re hearing that traffic is going to be backed up around the Capitol tomorrow.
If you haven’t connected with a blockade group, meet us at Union Station at 7am SHARP (actually try to get there at 6:30am!). We can update you on the plans, let you know what’s in motion and help you get to the blockade that connects with the issues and priorities that matter most to you!
We’re facing a deadline for democracy and the stakes couldn’t be higher. Join us in the streets tomorrow to shut down business as usual and open up space for a new kind of politics in Washington, DC.
In solidarity,
ShutDownDC
PS. Organizing bold actions like these takes resources. ShutDownDC is an all-volunteer project and we’re mostly funded by individual donations from supporters like you! If you’re able, please consider making a donation to support this important work.
