The Peoples Filibuster

GET EXCITED! ShutDownDC and friends are tired of Republicans filibustering the progressive agenda (and people like Joe Manchin and Kyrsten Sinema letting them). So, after a lot of brainstorming and talking to partners, we decided to hold our own filibuster FOR OUR agenda.

Here’s how we’re gonna do it:

  • Set up right down the block from Mitch McConnell's place (with plenty of visits to his house)

  • Filibuster for 25 hours from Nov. 14 at 4pm to November 15 at 6pm (beating evil Senator Strom Thurmond's record from when he filibustered the Civil Rights Act in 1957)

  • and featuring all of our friends and their voices on their priorities!

We’re going to be talking about everything from climate to voting rights to paid family leave to statehood for DC -- whatever speaks to you. And we're going to pepper in rallies, trainings, and a big organizing meeting to decide what to do next!

Here’s our tentative schedule:

Sunday 11/14

  • 4pm - 5 pm -- OPENING RALLY!

  • 5pm - 7pm -- Filibuster speaking slots (sign up below!)

  • 7pm - 9pm -- Defending Democracy: Open meeting to plan escalated actions over the next several weeks

  • 9pm - 8am -- Filibuster speaking slots (sign up below!)

Monday 11/15

  • 8am - 9am -- WAKE UP DEMOCRACY RALLY!

  • 9am - 12pm -- Filibuster speaking slots (sign up below!)

  • 12pm - 1pm -- MID-DAY RALLY!

  • 1pm - 5 pm -- Filibuster speaking slots (sign up below!)

  • 5pm - 6:30pm -- CLOSING RALLY!

What we need from you:
Can you or your organization sign up for a filibuster time slot?

We are asking individuals to take 15 minutes and organizations to take an hour or more (but we can be flexible). If your’e in, sign up below! You don't have to just talk during your slot -- you can hold a training, tell stories, or whatever you're good at!

ShutDownDC will be working with partners to provide seating, food, child care, and whatever you need to make this happen. Reach out to the logistics team with any questions!
